Abortion Options / Surgical procedures between 14-24 weeks

If you are in your second trimester, between 14 and 24 weeks pregnant, your procedure will take two to three days to complete. The first part of the procedure consists of the doctor inserting laminaria, a type of seaweed that swells by soaking up the fluid from the cervix. This allows the cervix to dilate wider in a more natural and gentle way. This process can take one to two days. When adequate dilation has occurred, the contents of the uterus are removed. There are several ways this part of the procedure can be performed. Your doctor will choose which is best. If you would like to know more about this procedure at a particular facility, call the Pro-Choice Hotline (1-800-ABORTION) and they will be able to give you more information. The entire process of the procedure will also be discussed with you at length at the time of your visit.
